Welcome Fr. Ternan!

We are looking forward to your “healing presence” among us.

I am Fr. Ternan Monteiro and I am the only child of my parents. I was born in Nairobi, Kenya and moved to Mumbai with my mother after the loss of my father at the age of 2. I grew up in a joint family which played an important role in my battle with leukemia at the age of 5. I joined the Jesuits in the year 1997, and was ordained a priest on November 19th, 2011. I have been in the Society of Jesus for 26 years. I have always been passionate about pastoral work and my greatest source of joy and satisfaction, is working in a parish. This is the main reason for me being in the process to leave the Jesuits, and incardinate as diocesan priest in the Diocese of Joliet.

My deep interest in counseling, in my early years of formation, led me to complete my diploma in counseling psychology. A special field of interest for me is grief and bereavement counseling, and I look forward to further engaging myself in this ministry. I have served as pastor and administrator of a parish, was a visiting lecturer at the Bombay Archdiocesan seminary, and have directed many Inner Healing retreats, for priests, nuns and seminarians. I am passionate about psycho-spirituality, and I integrate this into my retreats to help people experience healing and growth. I have also been involved with the Engaged Encounter movement, that prepares couples for marriage. I have just completed my Masters in Pastoral Counseling at Loyola University Chicago. I look forward to using my life experiences to offer all of you a secure and healing presence.
